Space travel presents many physiological and psychological challenges to astronauts. Therefore, mental and physical health are at the core of astronaut recruitment and training. Candidates are required to complete military water survival and become SCUBA qualified to prepare them for spacewalk training. They are exposed to problems associated with high and low atmospheric pressures in the altitude chambers, and are also able to experience 20-second periods of weightlessness through flights in a modified jet aircraft that performs parabolic maneuvers.
This playlist engages students in a variety of physical activities, mental challenges and team-building exercises that introduce them to the training regimen astronauts undertake when preparing to journey into space.
